Unreal Engine 5.5 Ships with MegaLights and MetaHuman Audio

Epic Games released Unreal Engine 5.5 on November 12, 2024. Three features stood out for us.

MegaLights lets you put hundreds of dynamic lights in a scene without destroying performance. That used to be impractical. For product visualization and virtual showrooms, it means we can set up realistic lighting without baking lightmaps or faking it with tricks.

MetaHuman Animator from audio is the other big one. Previously you needed video capture to drive MetaHuman expressions. Now it generates facial animation from audio alone. Guided showroom experiences and virtual assistants just got a lot cheaper to produce and update.

Mutable handles character and product customization at runtime, swapping materials, meshes, and textures on the fly. It's a better-performing path for the kind of real-time option switching that configurators need.

We've been testing MegaLights in active projects and evaluating the audio-driven MetaHuman pipeline for a couple of client demos. UE 5.5 also ships with animation authoring improvements and mobile tooling, both of which feed into how we deliver across platforms.
